What is a transfer switch?

A transfer switch is an electrical device that safely redirects power between the utility grid and a backup generator, preventing dangerous backfeed into power lines when both sources are active.

A transfer switch is the critical safety mechanism that lets your home switch between utility power and a backup generator without creating electrical hazards. When your generator runs during an outage, the switch physically isolates your home from the grid so power cannot feed back into utility lines, which would endanger line workers and damage equipment.

Transfer switches come in two main types. Manual switches require you to physically flip a lever or handle to change power sources, typically when you notice an outage and start your generator. Automatic transfer switches (ATS) sense when grid power drops, start your generator, and switch the load over without you doing anything. They reconnect to the grid automatically once power is restored. Automatic switches cost more but are essential if you want the generator to protect you while you sleep or while you are away.

Both types work the same way mechanically: they prevent the generator and grid from powering your home simultaneously. This isolation is not just for safety-it is required by electrical code in Florida. A properly installed transfer switch connects to your main electrical panel and controls which source feeds your circuits. Without a transfer switch, you cannot legally use a portable generator with your home's wiring.
