What is a transfer switch?

A transfer switch is the critical safety mechanism that lets your home switch between utility power and a backup generator without creating electrical hazards. When your generator runs during an outage, the switch physically isolates your home from the grid so power cannot feed back into utility lines, which would endanger line workers and damage equipment.

Transfer switches come in two main types. Manual switches require you to physically flip a lever or handle to change power sources, typically when you notice an outage and start your generator.
