What is grounding and bonding?
Grounding and bonding are interconnected safety systems in electrical installations that direct fault current safely to earth and ensure metal components are at the same electrical potential.
Grounding and bonding work together as your electrical system's safety net, though they serve distinct purposes. Grounding establishes a direct path from your electrical system to earth through ground rods driven into the soil outside your home or building. This path allows dangerous fault currents to dissipate harmlessly into the ground rather than through a person who touches a live conductor. Bonding, by contrast, connects all metal parts of your electrical system and equipment to the same electrical potential, preventing voltage differences that could cause shock.
In practice, both systems tie back to your main electrical panel. The grounding electrode (typically copper rods 8 feet or deeper in Sanford's sandy soil) connects to the panel's grounding bus bar, which carries fault current safely away. Bonding wires link metal water pipes, gas lines, equipment frames, and structural steel to this same bus bar, ensuring they carry no dangerous voltage. Without bonding, you might stand on a wet floor touching a metal sink while a fault occurs in an appliance, creating a path for current through your body. Without grounding, that fault current has nowhere to go except through whatever conductive path it finds.
