What is an electrical panel?
An electrical panel is the main distribution box mounted on a wall (often near the meter) that receives incoming power and splits it into individual circuits protected by breakers.
The electrical panel, also called a breaker box or load center, is the central hub where utility power enters your home or building and gets divided into individual circuits. It sits behind a metal door, usually mounted on an exterior or interior wall near your electric meter, and serves as the control point for all electricity flowing through your property.
Inside the panel, three main components work together. The main breaker controls the entire electrical supply and can shut off all power in an emergency or for maintenance. Bus bars are metal conductors that distribute incoming power to individual circuit breakers. Individual breakers protect each circuit by automatically cutting power if they detect an overload or fault, preventing fires and damage to appliances.
A typical residential panel in Florida handles 100, 150, or 200 amps of service capacity. Each breaker corresponds to a circuit serving different parts of your home: kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, AC units, water heaters, and so on. When a breaker "trips," it means that circuit has been overloaded or experienced a fault, and the breaker has safely disconnected it.
